California to Indiana (iPhone pics)

Eight states, 2,300+ miles, two hotel stays and one night with family later and we finally made it to Indiana last night! Each day had its own memorable incident(s) and I may or may not had been driving 70+ miles per hour when I took most of these pictures :P

Day 1: May 25th

We were one mile away from our stop for the evening and my husband's truck completely ran out of gas. It also took several hotel stops to find a hotel that isn't full and accepts dogs; all while we had a tried, hungry toddler in the truck.

Day 2: May 26th

I was issued my first speeding ticket (ever!) in Arizona. I was driving 10 miles over the speed limit and I totally deserved it :( You bet I drove the speed limit the rest of the trip.

Day 3: May 27th

My husband's clutch wouldn't shift while driving 70 miles per hour. Thankfully, he was able to safely take the exit and park while we figure out the problem, which we still do not really know.

Day 4: May 28th

I accidentally shut my little pinky at the screen door at Hubby's grandparent's house and it bled quite a bit. Hubby hit a huge pothole shortly after crossing the Indiana state line, which causes him to loose him muffler. Ooops.

The trip didn't exactly go smoothly but we are all safe and that is all that really matters. And I am soooo sick of driving and I refuse to drive until we have to report to Texas in 2+ weeks!

The Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today (May 24, 2011)

Outside my window... Sunny but chilly 50 degrees and my last daybook in Seaside, CA

I am thinking... about the "family," friends, and life we have created here. It has been a good two years.

I am thankful for... opportunities and new beginnings

From the kitchen... sooooo much food. For the last couple days, I've been cooking and baking everything that is perishable in our fridge and pantry.

I am wearing... jeans, blouse, cardigan

I We are going... to dinner one last time with friends tonight.

I am reading... nothing :(

I am hoping... our cross-country trip goes smoothly. This is Nathaniel's first long road trip and we're armed with a newly gifted portable DVD player from his Lola (grandmother [my mom]).

I am hearing... the dryer. Trying to wash everything so we don't have to bring/pack dirty laundry.

Around the house... mess-ish. Our packed stuff on one side of the house, wires unplugged, soooo much food in the kitchen, etc.

One of my favorite things... sleep, which I'm very low of currently. Hubby and I were up past 1am packing and setting everything up for TMO and they are still not here. I've been up 2+ hours thinking they will arrive early.

Inspired by the church song scripture... James 4:10 "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up." (Great song, too!)

A few plans for the rest of the week...

  • TMO is packing our house today
  • Begin four-day road trip to Indiana on Wednesday
  • Mom's birthday on Sunday
  • Memorial Day with family!
Here is a (iPhone) picture I am sharing... 5.24.10 Diapers, wipes, military uniform, civilian clothes, pillows, air mattress, toiletries, cleaning supplies, human and dog food, toys, pots and pans, important files and paperwork, etc. I think we're overdoing it a little bit. Last time we moved, we lived for two weeks with nothing. No cooking stuff, no pillows, no towels, etc! We don't want that to happen again especially with a toddler. Thankfully, we're driving two vehicles to fit all these.

Project 365: Week 20

Week 20: May 14th to May 20th

134  Finally used my birthday present from last year and went kayaking with Hubby; we saw so many sea creatures and birds up close.

135  When did he become a toddler and stopped being a baby?

136  Third year wedding anniversary dinner date at Monterey's Fish House: Oak-grilled baby octopus for appetizer. All of the food were soooo delicious!

137  Stopping at Jollibee for lunch after picking up my mom and Hubby's best friend at the airport in San Jose. Jollibee is a very well known Filipino fast food restaurant.

138  Fruit from the Farmer's Market the day before. We weren't able to hang out and walk around due to the rain. So we quickly bought food and brought the goodies at home.

139  Hubby's DLI graduation (with honors and Associate's Degree in Arabic)

140  Last trip to Asilomar Beach with my mom and Hubby's best friend

Defense Language Institute

After sixty-four grueling weeks of Arabic learning, my husband graduated with honors this past Thursday from the Defense Language Institute. He also received his Associate's Degree in Arabic and we could not be more proud of him!

Receiving his Associate's Degree

Receiving his diploma for completing the Arabic language course

My mom and his best friend came to town for the graduation. I was so happy and thankful that they were here for this joyous occasion.

On to the next thing. We're moving in a few days!

Inspire Happiness Daily

Welcome to our 365 Project! Everyone joining us from last week... Welcome back! And if you're here for the first time, we hope you join in the fun!

We'd like to challenge you to take a photo a day and every week link up and share your project with us and with each other. It's quite a task but a lot of fun! And at the end of the day, we're all learning so much from each other.

Don't have a 365? Don't worry! If you've had a great day or great week and you want to share with us, please join in the fun. Although many of us are doing our own 365, our goal here is to INSPIRE HAPPINESS DAILY. If that means you join us sporadically, we're okay with that. We're all here to encourage each other and learn, too.

Each week, Audrey (The Daily Wyatt), Tracey (Inspire Me Photography) and Diana (Find Your Happiness) will be picking our Top 5 Photos to highlight on our blogs. In order to be a winner, you must add your photo(s) from the week (not a collage) to our Flickr! group: 365 Days in Pictures. We are choosing our winners based on entries that week, not where you are in your 365.

Contemplating a 365? Why not start now! It's a motivating way to practice and a great skill-building tool. Warning: it can become addictive :)

Here are some of the details (you may already know):
  • Anyone can join at anytime. Don't worry about missing a week or a day; we know things come up! Just make sure you are challenging yourself---we're hoping to learn from and be inspired by this project.
  • Put all your week's photos into one blog post. You can choose to use a collage as an easy way to organize your week.
  • Photos MUST be your own and they MUST have been taken for that week's challenge, hence the 365 Days in Pictures.
  • Linky will be posted every Saturday for your photos taken that week.
  • Link only to your blog POST, not to your main blog url.
  • Include our project button in your entry. Our project button will link back to our individual blogs.
  • Show some love and visit other entries! We all love comments and it's a great way to encourage each other.

I am hearing... The dishwasher because I forgot to run last night. Ooopss.

Around the house... it's clean and neat right now since the Monster is still asleep :)

Third Year Anniversary

Today is our wedding anniversary. It has been three years since that gorgeous sunset at a beautiful garden where I vowed my life to be eternally intertwined to the man God has created just for me. This man---my partner in crime, my best friend, my happiness---allowed me to become what God had intended and designed me to be: a wife and a mother. He is by no means perfect but he is perfect for me. He is strong when I am weak. He is rational when I'm emotional. He is silly when I'm serious. And he is forgiving when I have wronged.

And everyday, life with him is so much more enjoyable and interesting. It is so much more challenging but bearable at the same. There is just so much more love and happiness. Life with him is perfect. My heaven on earth. My happiness.

And for that? I am forever grateful.

2010
Today is our second year wedding anniversary. This past year opened many new chapters for us: life as a military family, a new home 2000+ miles away from our family and friends, and new roles as parents. But one thing remained constant and made even stronger: our loyalty and love for each other. I could not think of a better partner to share this life with and I thank God every day for blessing me with his companionship.
Happy anniversary to my beloved;
my forever best friend, father of my child, and the reason for my happiness.

2009
Although I would give anything to have my husband with me on this special day, I understand why he isn't. It has been a long journey and required a lot of praying for me to be able to say those words. I'm ashamed to admit that I begged my husband not go to MCRD San Diego just a few feet away for the secured area of the Indianapolis Airport. At the time, I have not fully accepted the decision he had made for our family. But I put a fake brave face, kissed my husband goodbye and watched his airplane take off. But inside, I was full of anger. A lot of anger. So what's an angry, lonely married woman got to do? Look at the good ol' times. Our wedding pictures. It was then that I was reminded of our actual wedding day. How during the Declaration of Intent, my will be brother-in-law at the time stated that through marriage, Dean and I will make a commitment together to face disappointments, embrace dreams, realize hopes, and accept each other's failures. That during our vows, we promised to love, comfort, honor, and keep each other through the good times and the bad. How I vowed that with God's guidance, I will always obey my husband. So then, anger begins to leave my little broken heart slowly but surely. I can now say that I sincerely support my husband for the decision he made for us with no trace of anger in me. Just like the decision to marry each other, the decision to join the Corp was not taken lightly but was taken solemnly and advisedly. And I'm proud to say that a year later I can still say that I have found my happiness.

And my happiness is in San Diego.

2008
Today, I will declare my love in front of family, friends, and God. This day, I will marry the man that God has chosen and prepared for me. He is by no means perfect for God still has great plans for him. This man, whose name will become my own identity, is competitive, easily angered, and could be the greatest procrastinator. But I will still follow his lead, respect, and honor him for we have God to guide us both through this journey. And because this same man is also the reason for the constant happiness in my life. The one who continues to believe in me even when I have given up faith in myself. The one who gives me hope when I feel helpless. The one that loves me first before his own. Faith. Hope. And Love. And so this day marks the beginning of forever for I have found my happiness. My happily ever after. Today is my wedding day.

"...A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one." Matthew 19:5-6

Project 365: Week 19

Week 19: May 7th to May 13th

127  A photoshoot; How adorable looking is this baby boy? I am madly in love with his perfect little curls :)

128  Mother's Day; Nathaniel is still sick but we were able to go out for lunch after church and do other Mommy-approved activities

129  Creamy Lemon Shrimp in whole wheat linguine

130  I love Nathaniel's surprised look. And that catch light in his eyes? Totally natural!

131  Moussaka: a Greek dish---layers of potatoes, eggplant, meat and cheese and top with Bechamel sauce. It is sooo delicious. Recipe found here.

132  Little fingers drawing on the pavement with an egg-shaped chalk

133  Delicious Middle Eastern food from DLI for the Language Day event: Baklava, Curry Chicken Kabob and grilled Kufta. This is actually cooked by Hubby's teachers since we bought from their food stand instead of from local restaurants. (I had wrapped Shawarma.)

Defense Language Proficiency Test

 March 2011
(It's upside down because I took this photo while he was still working on it)

My husband passed his DLPT and OPI with flying colors. I am so proud of him! I still find it so difficult to believe but my husband is fluent in the Arabic language: reading, writing, and listening. How crazy, right? It has definitely been one intense a year and half.

Graduation is next Thursday and my mom and his best friend will be here in Monterey for that. Dean will also receive an Associate's Degree in World Studies since he has a few college credits prior to joining the Marine Corps.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today (May 10, 2011)

Outside my window... Cloudy 55 degrees

I am thinking... about all the things we need to do before we move (in less 15 days!) and how so little time we have left :(

I am thankful for... being a mother. The most difficult role yet but definitely one of the most rewarding job. Ever.

From the kitchen... halfway done Moussaka for dinner this evening.

I am wearing... purple blouse, jeans

I We are going... to buy paint tonight so we could repaint Nathaniel's nursery. There may be a ton few sheds of tears.

I am (sporadically) reading... Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson

I am hoping/praying... Hubby is doing well on his 2nd day of DLPT.

I am hearing... Nathaniel playing with my house slippers. And yes, I am currently wearing.

Around the house... toys

One of my favorite things... new adventures. Change is scary but it is also a great opportunity for growth.

Inspired by the church song scripture... Romans 8:31 "...if God is for us, who can be against us?"

A few plans for the rest of the week...

  • TMO coming over tomorrow afternoon to look at our stuff so they would have a better idea of how much boxes they would need.
  • Start painting over Nathaniel's nursery :(
  • A friend from church coming over to finish beautifying/cleaning/weeding our yard on Friday night
  • Hubby's PFT on Saturday morning (but he also told me this morning that it was probably moved to Friday morning).
  • Area wide breakfast at church on Saturday morning
  • Kayaking on Saturday afternoon; finally using my birthday gift from last August
  • Dinner with a friend and his family on Saturday night
  • Spring Fling/Family Party at Hubby's work on Sunday; still debating whether we should go and if I should enter the dessert competition
  • Third year wedding anniversary on Monday and a dinner date with Hubby
  • Mom and Hubby's best friend arrive in town on Tuesday for Hubby's graduation week

Here is a picture I am sharing... 5.07.11 How adorable is this baby boy? I just love his curls. (Photoshoot from last Saturday)

105.5F Fever & Mother's Day

Nathaniel was sick as a dog this past week. It started with a fever Sunday evening and his temperature just proceeded to go up over the next few days. By Wednesday afternoon, his fever was as high as 105.5F and it took a lot for me as a mother and a former nurse to not just rush and go straight to the hospital.

We went to see his pediatrician that same afternoon and she told us that Nathaniel is just fighting a really, really nasty virus. At that point, all we could do is monitor him and treat it symptomatically. He was also tested for strep throat (even though he is really too young to get it) because his throat were red and swollen. Fortunately, the result was negative. So on Thursday, I spent the whole day deep cleaning and disinfecting the house, in hopes that we could get rid of this virus.

These first few photos were taken that Wednesday and I should have known something was not right. Nathaniel doesn't nap on his own (he needs someone to lay down with him) and after a 45 minute nap, that's when I discovered his ridiculously high temperature. His fever stayed up between 101-103 for a few more days after that even with medication. And today is actually the first 24 hours that Nathaniel hasn't had any antipyretics since a week ago yesterday. He is still sick and actually developed diarrhea and cough on top of the runny nose but he at least does not have a fever anymore and his appetite is slowly coming back.

But I still had a great mother's day yesterday with my two favorite boys. After church, we had lunch then shopped for spices (I didn't know cardamom is super expensive!). We also went to Starbucks for the happy hour, where I enjoyed a delicious Mocha Coconut Frappuccino. Then later that afternoon, Dean napped with Nathaniel for FOUR hours (he was still quite sick), so I used that time to edit photos from my photoshoot last Saturday.

My mother's day gift is "on hold" because I can't decide if I want a necklace from The Vintage Pearl or a homemade canvas. I'm really leaning towards the canvas but since we are moving in less than three weeks(!), it is best if we just wait. But really, I'm just glad to have spent a wonderful day yesterday with my husband and son. Most days, I am still at awe that I am a mother.

(Linked to Perceptive Perspective: High Contrast)

Our preacher's sermon this past Sunday was about the great qualities and importance of Mothers. However, instead of feeling "important," I looked at my husband with a scared look and said "Wow, I could really mess up our kids." It is no doubt that mothers play a very important part in their children's lives and I pray every night that I am good enough to raise good, kind and God-fearing children. And I know God believes in me that I am capable of this because He has truly blessed me and granted my dreams beyond what I had imagined.

God really is good.
